The Moon is the brightest object in our night sky because it is closer to the Earth compared to the twinkling stars. The Moon is a giant ball of rocks. It is much smaller in size than the Earth. If the Earth is of the size of a grape then the moon will be the size of a peppercorn.
Due to its smaller size, the gravity of the Moon is less compared to that of the Earth. So your weight will be much lower on the Moon than that on the Earth. The lower gravity level will also allow you to jump much higher on the Moon as compared to the earth.
The Moon orbits around the Earth while rotating on its own axis. It does not produce any light of its own. It only reflects the light produced by the Sun.
There is no air on the Moon. So we cannot breath on the Moon without the oxygen cylinders. Also we cannot hear anything on the Moon because there is no medium to carry the sound waves.
Activities
- Explain how the moon rotates around Earth while also rotating around its own axis with the help of 2 balls.
- Show a grape and a peppercorn to the kids to help them understand the size difference between Earth and the moon.

Conversation Pointers
- Can you jump and touch the ceiling of the house? Let us pretend that you are on the Moon. Now, do you think you can jump and touch the ceiling? (Answer: Yes, due to the lower gravity level on the Moon, we can jump higher.)
- Let’s assume that two people are standing 2 feet away from each other on the Moon and they start talking. Do you think they can hear each other? (Answer: No, due to the vacuum, there is no medium on the Moon for carrying sound waves.)
